Bristol Rovers Community Trust were once again delighted to welcome the ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ team to The Memorial Stadium last week, to host a free educational event for over one-hundred and fifty Primary School pupils.
Children from some of our partner schools took part in a wide range of workshops, aiming to educate the pupils on discrimination, racism, hate crime and how we can all tackle racism together within society.
We were also joined by Bristol Rovers Women's first-team player Layah Douglas and Bristol Rovers Community College student Adam Mugondi for a Question and Answer session on their opinions and personal experiences with racism.
Show Racism the Red Card provide educational workshops, training sessions, multimedia packages, and a whole host of other resources, all with the purpose of tackling racism in society. Established in January 1996, the organisation utilises the high-profile status of football and football players to publicise its message. Across Britain, Show Racism the Red Card delivers training to more than 50,000 individuals per year.
Community Trust CEO, Adam Tutton, said: “We’re delighted to be helping to educate Bristol’s children on the importance of recognising the negative impacts of racism and discrimination. It is more important than ever to educate all those within our community. We stand united with organisations like (SRTRC) and ‘Kick It Out’ to tackle all forms of discrimination within football and society.”
Workshops are designed to be interactive and to help break down barriers and perceptions in society. Pupils learn about what racism is, how to report hate crime and the importance of respecting individuals regardless of ethnicity, religion, nationality and culture.
Seth Ejukwu from Show Racism the Red Card added: “We’d like more children to become ambassadors of anti-racism. By delivering our workshops and leading these discussions, we hope that children can learn about cultural diversity and take this knowledge with them into secondary school and beyond..”
