At Bristol Rovers, we know that education is about more than what happens in the classroom. It is about giving young people the opportunity to discover their strengths, pursue their ambitions and build a pathway towards the future they want.

Former Bristol Rovers BTEC student Ben Jefferies is a fantastic example of where that pathway can lead.

This week, Ben added another remarkable chapter to his story, winning silver in the men's 4x400m relay and silver in the mixed 4x400m relay at the 2026 European Athletics Championships. Earlier this month, he also claimed silver in the mixed 4x400m relay for England at the Commonwealth Games.

It is an incredible achievement for someone whose sporting journey began in Bristol with football.

Born and raised in Bristol, Ben grew up around Wick, Siston Common and Warmley. Although he had a brief introduction to track and field as a child, football was his main sporting passion.

Born and raised in Bristol, Ben grew up around Wick, Siston Common and Warmley. Although he had a brief introduction to track and field as a child, football was his main sporting passion. He played for Warmley Rangers and the South Gloucestershire Development Squad in the Junior Premier League before completing his secondary education at John Cabot Academy.

When it came to choosing what to do after his GCSEs, Ben decided against taking A-levels. His sporting commitments were becoming increasingly serious, and he wanted an educational route that would allow him to continue developing as an athlete.

That led him to the Level 3 BTEC programme run and supported by Bristol Rovers Community Trust, LFE and the EFL.

With an existing interest in Physical Education and Anatomy, the course proved to be an ideal fit. During his time on the programme, Ben became captain of the Bristol Rovers Futsal squad, represented the National All-Star Futsal Squad and was named the 2017/18 Bristol Rovers Community Trust Community Champion.

Academically, he excelled too, graduating from the BTEC programme with an outstanding DDD*.

Ben's BTEC qualification helped give him the academic foundation to pursue opportunities beyond the UK. During his time at Bristol Rovers, students were introduced to Future Elite Sports, an agency helping young people secure scholarships to study and play sport overseas. Ben decided to explore that route.

His combination of excellent academic results and a football highlight reel attracted multiple offers from universities in the United States. He ultimately chose Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, where he studied for a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology.

Through his academic and sporting achievements, Ben secured a full-ride scholarship, giving him the opportunity to study in America while continuing to develop as an athlete.

But his sporting journey was about to take an unexpected turn.

A European Championship silver medal

Ben's achievements have continued to grow since his time in America. In August 2026, he represented England at the Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the mixed 4x400m relay. He then produced another outstanding performance on the European stage, securing silver in both the mixed 4x400m relay and the men's 4x400m relay at the 2026 European Athletics Championships.

From a young footballer growing up in Bristol, to a BTEC student at Bristol Rovers, to a scholarship student-athlete in America, and now a European Championship medallist, Ben's journey is an inspiring example of the opportunities that can follow the right educational pathway.

A message for the next generation

Ben's story demonstrates that choosing a BTEC does not mean limiting your ambitions. Quite the opposite. For Ben, the BTEC programme provided an education that complemented his sporting commitments, helped him achieve outstanding grades and ultimately supported his journey towards university and elite sport overseas. His story also highlights an important message for current and future students: success doesn't always follow a straight line.

Ben started out as a footballer, discovered a new opportunity through his education, changed sporting disciplines and went on to compete at the highest level. The BTEC programme can help young people develop the knowledge, confidence and experience to pursue whatever comes next - whether that is further education, employment, elite sport or a completely different career. Ben is a brilliant example of what can happen when talent is supported, opportunities are embraced and ambition is given the space to grow.

Everyone at Bristol Rovers Community Trust would like to congratulate Ben on his outstanding achievements and wish him every success for the future.

And, perhaps most importantly, we hope his story inspires the next generation of Bristol Rovers BTEC students to believe in what is possible.
