Exploring Human Potential: Sam Kotadia Delivers Inspiring Session on Sports Psychology and Youth Development.

Students recently had the opportunity to learn from Sam Kotadia, a leading practitioner in sports psychology who has worked in the field since graduating from university in 2006. Sam currently serves as the First Team Sport Psychologist at Wrexham AFC and Head of Psychology for the national charity Empire Fighting Chance (EFC). His session offered valuable insights into both elite performance environments and the transformative power of community sports programmes.

A key component of the workshop was the bespoke workbook, "Launch Your Sports Venture", which guided students through exploring their business ideas. The workbook included exercises to identify market gaps, develop a unique selling proposition, and outline a basic business plan, all tailored to sports-related ventures. Students leave the programme inspired and equipped with practical tools, along with a renewed mindset to pursue self-employment opportunities in the sports industry - with Sam’s story serving as a powerful example of what’s possible.

Empire Fighting Chance, where Sam Kotadia and Titus Gaunt work, is a UK charity that supports vulnerable and disadvantaged young people aged 8 to 25. Its unique model combines non-contact boxing with tailored personal support - including mentoring, therapy, and careers guidance - to help young people build resilience, confidence, and the skills they need to reach their potential. Through this approach, EFC continues to champion equality and opportunity across communities.

Sam’s session guided students through fundamental entrepreneurial principles, highlighting common challenges faced by emerging professionals and the mindset required to create their own opportunities. A practical T-shirt marketing exercise, combined with personal reflection on future ambitions, helped students form clear ideas for their final - year dissertations and identify actionable steps for their career pathways.

The event left attendees inspired, informed, and better equipped to pursue their goals - both academically and professionally.

Bristol Rovers Community Trust and Empire Fighting Chance share a strong and longstanding partnership. First-team players have previously taken part in boxing sessions at the EFC gym, and joint initiatives - such as BTEC programmes and training activities - reinforce the commitment both organisations have to supporting young people through education and sport.
